Biography

Nicolas Demartines, MD, FACS, FRCS, is Professor of Surgery Emeritus and former Chief Executive Officer of the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV), Switzerland (2023–2024). He currently serves as a member of the Innovation Council of Innosuisse, the Swiss federal agency for the promotion of innovation. In this role, he contributes to the strategic evaluation and final selection of national scientific projects in the life sciences that involve start-ups or small and medium-sized enterprises. The Council, composed of six members, has the final authority to approve funding decisions, with an overall acceptance rate of approximately 20%.

Professor Demartines is also actively engaged with IRCAD, the international research and training institute dedicated to surgical education and the development of innovative surgical technologies in collaboration with the MedTech industry. He serves as Course Director for advanced hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgical programs at IRCAD centers in France, the United States, Brazil, Taiwan, and India. Beginning in 2026, he has been appointed Chair of the IRCAD Scientific Board, overseeing the strategic scientific direction and evaluation of research and training initiatives across the IRCAD global network.

 

He has been internationally recognized for his contributions to academic surgery and innovation, and is an Honorary Member of the American Surgical Association, the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the Académie Nationale de Médecine, and the Académie Nationale de Chirurgie in Paris, The Chinese College of Surgeons, as well as the Swiss Society for Visceral Surgery.
